From Austin:
"I was drawn to the helping profession through a passion for education...
Observing ways in which trauma can manifest as social and emotional behaviors in a classroom setting guided me to set my sights on helping children and adolescents be the most successful versions of themselves at school and at home.
Upon working in a residential treatment facility, I learned about the incredible impact that a strong therapeutic relationship and psychoeducational materials can have on children who have experienced significant traumas. I also witnessed many challenges that residential treatment facilities face in delivering adequate and appropriate care to their residents. Accordingly, I am focused on advocating for the needs of underrepresented and marginalized demographics in mental health care across settings. I embrace the counseling profession’s relationship-driven empowerment of holistic wellness with a developmental emphasis.
I work from a person-centered perspective and employ evidence-based treatments to help clients navigate their developmental journey. I also maintain an existentialist philosophical approach to help clients find meaning in all aspects of their lives.
In a session with me, I will focus on developing a strong therapeutic relationship through an empathetic understanding of the client’s journey, and collaborate with them to create personal wellness goals with empowerment techniques from evidence-based practices.
It is important for me to create and maintain a comfortable physical and emotional environment that promotes trust between the client and myself. I recognize the important role that various systems in a child’s life have in their development, and I work with clients to navigate the complexities and difficulties of those systems.
I grew up playing multiple sports but especially loved hockey. I am an avid fan of my hometown teams in Michigan including the Detroit Lions, Red Wings, Tigers, and all things Michigan State University. In my free time I love to hang out with my dog, Winston. Winston and I frequently go on hikes in the mountains or fly fish on local streams. I also love traveling, and once got the opportunity to play for the United States Wheelchair Floorball team at the Swiss Wheely Open in Switzerland as an able-bodied volunteer.
